What brought you to CrossFit Apogee? I was actually driving by around Christmas 2013 when Apogee was first opening. It took me a couple weeks, but I think I first came in right after Apogee first opened. I still regret not getting a founder’s club shirt because I thought we would be moving shortly after I started because of work. Thankfully we are still here!
What was your first impression? I was hooked from the first workout! Probably because you could make the workouts competitive if you chose to. Being a former athlete, my workouts always had a purpose behind them and that was lost after I stopped playing in college. So I could never stick to anything because I didn’t feel a purpose to the workout. Now it is about striving to constantly get better every day, that is the purpose.
What was your first Bright Spot (or something you were happy you finally did)? There are a lot of bright spots. But my first benchmark was my first open in 2014. Those workouts were amazing. I just remember how good it felt to finish the open and see how you did, it was great.
What changes have you noticed in yourself since you joined the Apogee Family? I feel like Apogee gave me my mojo back. After I stopped playing sports in college I lost that trust you gain in your body and what you are capable of physically. Now, like before, I don’t feel I would back away from any physical challenge placed in front of me.
What is your favorite Apogee memory? My favorite Apogee memory was finally getting Angela to try it out! I had been harassing her for awhile and she finally broke down and tried an on-ramp class. She was hooked like me from the first workout. I asked when she came home how she liked it and she couldn’t hold back the smile and said she loved it. Shortly after that we did the WOD to End Vets Suicide in 2015 as a team and it was awesome! This year we did the Savage race together! I feel like it has given us another level we can connect on in life. We love Apogee and the Apogee Family.
What brought you to CrossFit? Chris brought me! He had been badgering me for months to try it out. Everything I heard about CrossFit made me think it was some kind of satanic cult…the workouts sounded insane, people who did it were abnormally obsessed with it, and Chris would come home from workouts looking exhausted sometimes. Needless to say I wasn’t too excited to try it out. But I finally agreed, and it was one of the best decisions I made in my life.
What was your first impression? I think I was shaking when I walked in for my first On-Ramp class last July. But I was greeted by Melissa’s friendly face and her demeanor immediately calmed me. She told me about her success story and how amazing the coaches and the culture of Apogee was. While I was talking to her Don appeared. Of course he was grinning from ear to ear (as he always is) and could see I was incredibly nervous. He simply said, “It’s going to be awesome!” Awesome? I wanted to punch him….but, it was awesome, and I was hooked after my first workout.
What was your first bright spot? That’s a tough one, because I feel at Apogee there are so many bright spots that happen every week, maybe even every day. But I have to say most recently completing a workout with cleans and the coach saying “Your form is perfect every time when you focus.” That was huge for me. I’ve been struggling with my Olympic lifting form since I started, and to have it finally “clicking” is a huge accomplishment for me.
What changes have you noticed? There have been so many positive changes since I started CrossFit a year ago. I have more energy, I’m stronger, I’m happier, I’m more active with my boys, I’m more confident, and of course I’m happy that my clothes fit better! It’s also nice to connect with Chris on the fitness level. He’s always been the better athlete of the two of us, but little did I know (until I started at Apogee) that I’m pretty strong, and we connect on a whole different level now. I’ll beat him in a WOD someday…
What is your favorite Apogee memory? There have been so many amazing memories. I’ve met some of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever come across in my life since starting at Apogee. But I have to say my favorite memory was the Open this past March. Everything about it was amazing-the atmosphere, the workouts, the camaraderie, the intensity. It truly showcased Apogee and what it’s all about. Anytime I think about it, I smile and think about next year. I can’t wait to see the progress I’ve made come the next Open. Apogee is one-of-a-kind. I’ve been to other boxes in other parts of the country, and none of them can compare to Apogee. The amazing coaches and the love and respect the members have for one another is truly unique, and I feel blessed to be a part of it.
