What brought you to CrossFit Apogee? 

I initially went to sign Steven up as a Father’s day gift but decided I too needed a change in my workout routine. I never really felt the need to workout until after I had my son. I had tried different gyms and even videos such as p90x, but could not stay motivated and was not getting the results I wanted. So after Steven joined I thought ??why not?? And signed up a month later.  

What was your first impression? 

I was really nervous when I started but soon fell in love with the people and the friendly, supportive community that Apogee has. 

What was your first Bright Spot (or something you were happy you finally did)?

There have been so many Bright Spots since I have started but I think getting my first butterfly pull-up was the best feeling. And to start stringing them together felt amazing

What changes have you noticed in yourself since you joined the Apogee Family?

I’ve noticed a huge change in my body and how much I am capable of doing. I am growing stronger every day and still at 7 months pregnant, I’m amazed at what I can do thanks to CrossFit.

What is your favorite Apogee memory?

My favorite memory is doing my first Hero WOD with Steven. I really enjoyed being able to do that workout together. We push each other to do better and CrossFit has given us something to do together.

What brought you to CrossFit Apogee? 
I was inspired by some other Crossfitters transformational body changes such as my husbands cousin in TN and Reba’s (yes Reba McEntire) little sister Susie and both of them encouraged me to go. I have been battling many health issues since hitting my 30’s and also had gained more weight from the chronic fatigue than ever in my life and decided to do something DRASTIC about it. Working out at home as I had done in the past always lost its luster and I had never enjoyed the process. I only liked working or with a buddy but never could get one to stick around long enough to keep it going. The “group” setting was also a big part of the draw and they had child care options which was necessity for me. After 6-8 months of consideration and driving by Apogee I decided to take a leap and give it a try. 

What was your first impression?
I was anxious of getting hurt or agitating my already inflamed joints beyond what I could tolerate. I also remember thinking during my 1:1 on ramp wod of 5 RFT in round 3 that there was NO WAY I was going to make it to 5 rounds… but I did! That post wod feeling was the beginning of an addiction! Micheal was super encouraging and just a total believer in my ability to push through to the end even though I didn’t feel I would make it. It did take about 2 months before I felt like I could really stay with the class as I had become more comfortable with the lingo and had built up some endurance for the metcons.  

What was your first Bright Spot (or something you were happy you finally did)? A PULL UP!!!!!!!!!

What changes have you noticed in yourself since you joined the Apogee Family? 
More muscles of course and endurance for the HIIT style metcons. I can now run over a mile at a time consistently. I also notice better body mechanics when picking things up off the floor or pushing/pulling things at work or home because I’m using muscle rather than spine or joints. Biggest and best change is that I actually look forward to working out which has never happened for me in any of my past “workout” adventures which means this time it ought to stick! So far it has as this is month 10 for me of that Crossfit life.

What is your favorite Apogee memory? 

That’s a hard toss up. I will give you 2. My first MURPH and the sense of accomplishment I had after completing it considering I had only been at the gym a month or so and was still in the learning curve. I couldn’t sit down for a week after all those squats! The other was the ONE time I got my husband to come WOD with me in September as he is my ultimate buddy so I was in Crossfit heaven that day.

Be the Unexpected

So here we are, the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games Open is upon us; we are #intheopen. Excitement and anticipation are slowly transforming into apprehension because Dave Castro said, “Expect the unexpected.” What does that mean?! Let’s be honest; #TDC clues are a code that has yet to be cracked. Here’s my take on Dave Castro’s statement; don’t be rattled by the word “unexpected.” Be the unexpected!

CrossFit is about fitness, and it is also about community. The CrossFit Open is a time for box members to encourage each other in new ways. This year, CrossFit Apogee is holding a weekly Saturday Showdown during the CrossFit Open. What’s great about this event is that it brings members from all the weekly class times together at once. This provides an opportunity for new friendships to form. We have so many awesome members at our box, and we’ll all have a chance to make CrossFit memories together during The Open.

Do something unexpected for a boxmate during the CrossFit Open this year. Create a poster for someone, and hold it up high during the WOD. Belt out a cheer, and encourage others to join in. Take some pics of boxmates in action, then post them on social media, praising them for their awesome efforts. Have a cold FITAID waiting for a boxmate post WOD. Make some tasty Paleo treats, and bring them to the gym for spectators to snack on. Send encouraging texts to boxmates during the week with specific accolades on what they did during 18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 18.4, and 18.5! When you see the look of defeat upon a boxmate’s face toward the end of a WOD, scream your heart out for them, or (if there’s space) join in their suffering for their last reps! Be the unexpected!

Additionally, as athletes, let’s push each other past our self-made limitations. Let’s WOD harder and smarter. Whether it is moving just a teensie bit faster, taking shorter breaks between sets, skipping that chug of water, or sprinting through the last 10 seconds of the WOD…accomplish the unexpected; revel in the unexpected! Be in the unexpected!

So here’s to us; let’s join together and make the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games Open a memorable event for our box! Let’s show up and show off at the Saturday Showdown! We’ve trained for this! We can do this! Let’s sweat out some reps, cheer each other on, and have fun together as a community. Let’s Be the Unexpected!

What brought you back to CF Apogee?

I stopped working out while I was pregnant. The whole time I was away, I was itching to get back! As soon as the doctor cleared me to resume working out, I came right back.

What was your welcome like?

I have to admit I was a little nervous to return, but everyone welcomed me back with open arms and it was like I never left! 

Does Crossfit have any impact on your teaching?

CrossFit makes me feel amazing!! When I feel good about myself then that reflects in all aspects of my life. And it certainly gives me energy to keep up with my 3rd graders all day 😉

What changes have you noticed in yourself since you’ve been back? 

Confidence! I haven’t really noticed any physical changes yet, but in just the few short weeks that I’ve been back, I can say that I already feel much better about myself. 

What is your favorite Crossfit movement? 

Well, it WAS box jumps. But it’s going to take some time to get back to being as good at them as I once was.
